This week, I continued to work on my poster and article spread, and started work on my website landing page.

Poster

After my desk crit session with the professor, I realized that different color and font choices could help bring some more excitement to my poster design. Because of the prominence of the gray in my first design, the accent colors appeared more muted and desaturated, which resulted in an almost somber mood in the poster. Additionally, the font choice that I made resulted in my poster looking similar to a magazine cover, which honestly is what I was going for in my first iterations but is understandably not fitting for this project. In light of these suggestions, I was encouraged to play around with a vibrant picture background color, and a geometric sans serif font family for the poster copy. Here are my updated iterations:

In these iterations, I added white outlines the title and the arm to introduce a third color that I think will be useful for my article spread design and my website design. I also think it adds an extra level of interest for my title text.

Article Spread

Last week, I began work on an article spread that I was not entirely comfortable with. The spread looked a little busy, and I also struggled to see any parallels between my poster design and my article spread. This week, after working more on my poster design, I was able to revisit this work and create something a little more cohesive.

I believe that deciding on a more prominent color scheme, as well as narrowing down my font to something more recognizable, allowed me to create more of a similar feeling in my article spread and poster designs.

In order to tie in more of the poster concept to my article spread, I am thinking about using black/white/gray treatment for the author photo, similar to the image of the arm in the poster. I also am considering having a few lines of text that are arranged organically along the image, in a way that is similar to the way that the titles of the talks are arranged on the poster.

Website

After working on the poster design and the article spread, I started doing a little work on the website landing page. Prior to working on the design in Figma, I scrolled through Behance a little to get some inspiration. Then, using the grid features that we went over in class last week, I organized a few potential designs for an event landing page. Find images below, with and without grid lines:

I hope to get some guidance in class on these designs, and feedback on where I should look for next steps. For the assignment submission, I hope to design both a landing page and a “speakers” page, featuring information about each of the attending speakers. I’m looking to make my speakers page appear something like this:
