I’ve always thought flames were fascinating. Not so fascinating that I’d want to use them to set buildings on fire, but beautiful to watch on candles or lighters. In addition to being beautiful, flames are dangerous and useful, naturally occurring and man made, simple and awe inspiring. I decided to create 50 different renderings of flames and fire. My initial renderings were small drawings on paper. Some of these drawings are simple pictures of flames in different colors. Other drawings illustrate ways that humans have harnessed fire for useful purposes (campfires, lighters, candles). There are also drawings of fire and how it naturally occurs in the world (wildfires, lightning fires, comets, stars). These drawings reminded me all of the numerous ways that fire can be made, used, and appreciated.

33 hand drawings of flames/fire. Includes: stars, fireworks, exhaust fires, bunsen burners, forrest fires, and more.

After creating my drawings, I recorded a few videos of flames that I had access to in my home. I used two lighters and a candle to illustrate the different ways that flames can be ignited or put to use in a domestic setting. Additionally, I asked a friend to send me a few pictures of his gas stove to further illustrate this point.

After taking in person pictures, I moved on to Photoshop. I learned through online tutorials that it is easy to render flames onto any uploaded picture. I used photoshop to create the rest of my renderings:
